Free Weights Overview
If you are looking to lift with free weights then The Powerhouse is the place for you! The free weight gym is 3,000 sq. feet of equipment. We feature Universal, Polaris, Fitness Works, Rhodos, Pin and Plate Loaded equipment, plus a large range of Olympic and Standard hole Bar Bells and Dumbbells.
We have the heaviest range of Dumbbells in the country. Our Dumbbells go from 1kg 2.25lb to 82kgs 180lbs. The Dumbbells go up in 1kg 2.25lb increments. This range provides small increments for areas like the Shoulders and Biceps in most gyms the increments are too large 2,5kgs for these smaller muscle groups.
We are not a Fitness Centre but we have a good selection of cardio machines to choose from! The constant music playing in our gym makes for a enjoyable indoor workout.

Magnetic Clip On’s
These should be here this week. Our Dumbbells are in 5lb increments 2.2kgs .The Doughnuts attach themselves to the Dumbbells one on each side. Each one weighs 1.25lb so on a 5lb D/B it now becomes 7.5lb. The 5lb jump is some times too much for the Biceps or Shoulders, this simple tool has doubled our range of Dumbbells we now have 5lb to180lb or 2.2kg to 82kgs in 1.1kg / 2.5lb increments. This should mean we have the largest and heaviest range of Dumbbells in the country.
On a ship far away are Dumbbells from 110lb to 180lb these should set some tongues flapping.
The dumbbells have arrived and are set up ready for action
At long last our chains have arrived, this is another training tool you will not find in the Fitness Centres. Imagine arriving at one of the major Fitness Centres armed with 5/8th or 16mm chains around your neck, bands on top of that and 6×2 boards under your arms. Think they will let you in Hell No!!!. The chains are used as a deloading effect, helping with explosive speed in all three lifts. Chains are used in all lifts and are adjusted to your Bench Squat and Deadlift weight performance. The chains deload at the bottom and increase in weight at the top end of your lifts, giving you unreal explosive power. As with most of our toys controlled and supervised work outs are the norm.
The POWER STEP is 5 level 9″ 12″ 15″ 18″ 21″ adjustable platform used for Box Squats, Step Ups, Single Leg Squats, Behind Neck Press, Stiff Leg Deadlift, Depth Jumps, and certain Plyometric Exercises.
The weighted Step Up uses the Concentric Up Motion of the lift. Not the Eccentric action that can damage Ligaments and Joints.
Taken from the Westside Barbell as most of our training methods come from. These simple tools increase Bench Press poundage like no other Tricep exercise.
We are probably the only Gym in New Zealand to have these type of bands. These are a serious hardcore training tool. The bands pictured have a total weight of 150lbs / 68kgs of tension at the top of his lift. With the bar at 132lbs / 60kgs this equals 285lbs / 130kgs at the top. The bands shown are for people with a squat of 300lbs / 136kgs. Our largest bands have a tension weight of 100lbs / 46kgs i.e. 2 bands equal 200lb / 92kgs tension at the top of the lift. Controlled and supervised workouts are the norm for this type of training. Bands are used for all 3 power lifts, Bench, Squat and Dead Lift.
A true hardcore training system, not for the faint hearted. This style of Squatting is very taxing and is performed under controlled conditions, Spotters / helpers are needed for these sets. Has a potential carry over of between 100lb / 46kgs to 200lb / 92kgs from your Box Squat 1 rep max to the Full Squat and Deadlift.
